Chili Recipes

Developing the perfect chili recipe includes much research and taste testing. A chili recipe, like any other recipe, will take adding some ingredients here and taking some out there.
When researching the best chili recipe to emulate, look at the common ingredients.
A chili recipe should always include tri-tip beef. Instead of tri-trip roast pieces, a chili recipe can include ground beef (with a course chili grind), or chicken or turkey pieces for a more healthy choice. However, for the most hearty or robust chili recipe, tri-tip beef should be used. It adds the “chunk” and taste that makes a chili recipe thrive.
Vegetables such as onions and tomatoes are also common in a chili recipe. A vegetarian chili recipe has many vegetables. This chili recipe includes corn and carrots.
Variations of onions are prevalent in the ideal chili recipe. Finely chopped fresh onions might be used in one chili recipe, while another chili recipe asks for onion powder.
A delicious chili recipe might also require diced tomatoes and green chilies. Tomato juice is a very common and necessary ingredient in a chili recipe because it provides a base. A spicy chili recipe goes so far as to require Spicy V-8 Juice.
Another ingredient common in a chili recipe is beef or chicken broth. Broth in a chili recipe adds flavor and thickness to the chili. Using water in its place in a chili recipe will make the chili too fluid, reducing the spicy taste quality.
Also found in a chili recipe is cumin seasoning. Some may argue that cumin is not necessary to the chili recipe, that it only enhances the spicy flavor. A chili recipe can survive without cumin because of all the pepper and chili seasonings already in place.
Chili powder and chili peppers can be used for the spicier chili recipe. Chili peppers are not included in every chili recipe, but chili powder is an essential. Adding to the spicy flavor of a chili recipe is Tabasco sauce, another necessary ingredient found in most – if not all – chili recipes.
A chili recipe should include garlic cloves or garlic powder. Garlic, and a small inclusion of oregano, offers a balance for the chili recipe. Rather than have the chili recipe slanted toward pepper seasoning, adding garlic and oregano enriches the total seasoning taste value.
Other balancing ingredients that contribute to the overall taste of a chili recipe are brown sugar and lime juice. Tomato sauce includes some sweetening to the chili recipe but brown sugar, or even apple juice or honey, accentuates the taste.
What about the beans? The most ardent chili recipe developers do not include beans because they believe chili is about the meat, vegetables and spices. A prize-winning chili recipe rarely includes beans.
However, if beans are preferred, a chili recipe can include pinto beans or kidney beans. Just make sure the chili recipe calls for the beans to be included after the chili is cooked, otherwise the beans will turn to mush.
